About Retreat DFW
We are the Lockwoods. I’m Todd and I got into real estate after finding out my wife, Tori, was pregnant with twin girls. I knew the very little money we had and my corporate job wasn’t gonna cut it as we prepared to build a family. I had seen an episode or two of “Flip That House” and so our journey began. The 1st house was a learning experience to say the least. I would kiss my pregnant wife good night and then head over with a 6 pack and a boombox to work into the early AM. Shower, get a few hours of sleep, go to my office job and repeat. It didn’t take long for us to realize I didn’t know what I was doing and needed help. Armed with craigslist.com, for better and usually worse, I was able to push forward and eventually complete the project over budget and behind schedule. We somehow managed to make money, the twins were born and I was hooked on flipping houses. I even left the hospital to attend the next house auction.
Fast forward a few years, 25+ house flips, a 3rd child with 4th on the way, a newly acquired taste for unusual properties and then I see this……..
I had to have it. I remember closing on it not knowing what I was going to do with it or how I was going to tell my wife. I sent her a video of me sliding into the massive resort pool, “Surprise!” An amazing summer ensued, playing and gathering with family and friends. I grew up in the country, playing outside all day, exploring and creating adventures. It was a blessing, to see my kids off their screens and doing the same.
Towards the end of summer, we listed it for sale but no reasonable offers came. It was time for Plan B, to share our family Oasis with others as a short-term rental. The Dallas Oasis was born and so was my 4 th kid. That is how we got into the retreat biz whether it was luck, accident, or fate, we had a strong desire to share our fun property with others.
After the Dallas Oasis, we stumbled across another amazing opportunity to create something special for others to enjoy. Initially, named “The Woods” with a simple objective “Get back to nature.” Hiking, ziplining, climbing, exploring, and oh yeah, the birth of the Texas Sized slip-n-slide.
This was a game changer, we created tons of amazing memories, helped 1000s of others do the same, fell in love with hosting and had the desire to create more family retreats. I even got to quit my corporate job.
Then we saw this place… and again I had to have it. Here comes “Retreat Oak Leaf” and the awesome near acre cement pond. Why the heck not!?! And of course you gotta have another Texas sized slip-n-slide.
With another retreat for family, friends and fellowship, our plan of keeping the 4 kids off the screens was working (ok, somewhat working, we are still losing the screen battle). I wonder if creating a new retreat every year or 2 to keep them entertained was sustainable but then I see 15 acres of potential on the northeast side of DFW.
After a challenging 6 months, “Retreat Anna” is launched. The most Texas sized slip-n-slide yet not to mention an acre of fake turf for a private golf course and so much more.
We have since sold The Dallas Oasis and The Woods which was definitely bittersweet but plan to own and operate TexanaDFW and RetreatAnna for years to come. We also plan to open the 5th location in early 2023 so please stay tuned.
When we are not building new retreats the six of us enjoy traveling and checking out other short-term rentals across the country. We live in North Dallas and still handle some of the check-ins personally. So if you come visit you may get to see our baby, now 4yrs old giving a tour (he loved hiking to show guests his Treehouse at The Woods). You may see Tori and our twin girls, Ellie & Kate, practicing volleyball (although, better chance Kate is looking for turtles, lizards, or other critters). You could see me yelling at Jack to put down his screen and go shoot some hoops or hit a golf ball. You may also see my brother, Jason, standing in the middle of the 400,000 gallon cement pond with a pool vacuum while his 3 kids run around and explore. I was blessed and lucky enough to drop the corporate biz for the fun biz. This is truly a family passion as we love seeing others get to experience our retreats and hope to see your family at a Retreat DFW location soon.
